Kids Programme
From 28 June to 02 July, Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria presents an exciting winter edition of the Bokamoso Holiday Art Programme, inviting children aged 7–15 to explore contemporary art through experimentation, collaboration, and hands-on learning during the school holidays.
This installment promises an exciting week of hands-on creative learning inspired by our new exhibition Between Here and Elsewhere which features works by Tlhagella Incubation Programme's Top 10 artists. Kids will be introduced to art-making techniques including textile sculpture, poetry-based paper works, synthetic hair sculpture, and cyanotype printing.
Bokamoso Holiday Art Programme offers a fun, safe, and enriching environment which nurtures the next generation of creative thinkers. The programme provides children an engaging space to experiment with artmaking, storytelling, performance, and creative collaboration while building confidence, curiosity, and cultural awareness. It’s five days of inspiration, imagination, and self-discovery!
Programme Schedule
Day 1 | Family Day Edition
Sunday, 28 June | 13:00–15:00
The programme opens with a Family Day experience featuring a hands-on beadmaking workshop led by Tlhagella Top 10 artist Senzelw'umusa Mathe. Drawing on a beadmaking practice inherited from her grandmother, Mathe explores questions of lineage, memory and cultural inheritance through her work. Inspired by the rich traditions of isiZulu beadwork—historically used by young Zulu women to communicate messages of love and connection—the workshop invites children and parents to discover beadwork as both a creative art form and a language of storytelling.
Each child's ticket includes entry for one accompanying parent or guardian. Additional guests are welcome to participate by purchasing a general admission ticket at R80.
Day 2: Paper Works and Poetry
Monday, 29 June | 19:00–13:00
Inspired by the work of Ziyanda Mkhosana | Facilitated by Thuli Chauke
Learners will begin the programme by exploring themes of memory, identity, and belonging
through poetry and mixed-media artmaking. Inspired by Ziyanda Mkhosana's artistic practice, participants will reflect on the question, "What reminds me of home?" Using personal memories, stories, photographs, and meaningful objects as inspiration, learners will write short poems and transform these into layered artworks through collage, drawing, painting, and paper experimentation. The workshop encourages self-expression, storytelling, and reflection while introducing learners to the relationship between art, culture, memory, and personal identity.
Day 3: Synthetic Hair Sculptures
Tuesday, 29 June | 9:00-13:00
Inspired by the work of Regina Mokoae | Facilitated by Monica Machabe
Building on the themes of memory and identity introduced on Day 2, learners will create soft sculptures inspired by Regina Mokoae's use of synthetic hair and sculptural forms. Through discussions about care, family, community, and personal connections, participants will explore how materials can carry stories and emotions. Learners will construct imaginative "comfort creatures" using recycled and textile materials, experimenting with three-dimensional artmaking while considering how texture, form, and material choices can communicate meaning.
Day 4: Cyanotype Printing and Nature-Based Image Making
Wednesday, 01 July | 9:00-13:00
Inspired by the practice of Thato Mothobi | Facilitated by Onkgopotse Phukubje and Thato Mothobi
Learners will explore the intersection of art, nature, and science through cyanotype printing. Participants will collect natural materials such as leaves, flowers, and ferns to create compositions on specially prepared light-sensitive paper. Using sunlight as a creative tool, learners will discover how ultraviolet light can produce striking blue-and-white photographic prints. The workshop encourages experimentation with composition, light, shadow, and observation while introducing an alternative photographic process in a fun and accessible way.
Day 5: Spiritual Expression Through Art
Thursday, 02 July | 9:00-13:00
Inspired by the work of Patience Kekana | Facilitated by Warona Lelaka
The final day focuses on spirituality, ancestry, healing, and personal storytelling through art. Drawing inspiration from Patience Kekana's artistic practice, learners will engage in conversations about cultural identity, family rituals, belief systems, and memory. Through a mixed-media artmaking session, participants will experiment with texture, colour, symbolism, and materials such as wool, beads, paint, and collage elements to create artworks that reflect their own stories and connections. The workshop provides a space for reflection and creative expression while celebrating diverse cultural experiences and ways of knowing.
This programme is made possible by the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).
